Keith Howard Pannell, Ph. D., professor of chemistry in The University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Science, is part of the 2016 class of American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellows. The group includes 57 national and international scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and made important contributions to ACS, the world’s largest scientific society.

Pannell’s work on silicon and silicon metal systems has been recognized internationally. He has been active within ACS and does much of his outreach and science/chemistry awareness via his weekly public radio program “Science Studio.”

“I’m very happy to get the recognition,” Pannell said. “It is not just a recognition for me, but it’s also a recognition for the institution and for the student body because it’s the students here that do the research.”

The fellows program began in 2009 as a way to recognize and honor ACS members for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and the ACS.

“While the ACS Fellows designation is a great honor for the recipients, it is a small measure of our gratitude for their dedicated service to chemistry,” said ACS President Donna Nelson.

The 2016 Fellows were recognized at a ceremony and reception Aug. 22, 2016, during the Society’s 252nd National Meeting and Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
