UTEP’s Hispanic Health Disparities Research Center and the Vulnerability Issues in Drug Abuse (VIDA) Research Training Program will host a free conference that will feature multidisciplinary sessions exploring topics related to drug abuse, including the neuroscience of drug abuse, intimate partner violence, and sociocultural and community factors.

Titled, “Vulnerability To Drug Abuse Among Hispanics: Bridging Science and Society,” the conference will provide a platform for discussions among research scientists, behavioral health providers, law enforcement officials, and students in fields related to drug abuse.

Keynote speaker Carl Hart, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Columbia University, will help facilitate conversations and connections between researchers and community members. His address will focus on the complex interactions between drugs of abuse and the neurobiology and environmental factors that mediate human behavior and physiology.

In his popular book, High Price, Hart interweaves his own experiences in communities vulnerable to drug abuse together with recent scientific research to argue that drugs do not turn people into criminals.
