Sergio Garcia, Ph.D., a former UTEP student and current assistant professor at Cornell University, will give a guest lecture on Latino politics at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5 in the Undergraduate Learning Center on the UTEP campus.

Garcia finished his M.A. in political science at UTEP before earning his Ph.D. at the University of Washington.

Garcia will speak about the possible impact of the Latino vote on this year’s presidential election and how immigration has played a role in the election campaigns. Garcia also will speak about the grown of the Latina vote between 2012 and this year.

“There are no words to express what it’s going to feel like coming back to UTEP and giving a lecture,” Garcia said. “In many ways I am the typical student from Mexico that attends UTEP. When I was at school at UTEP, I worked for Sodexo at the Don Haskins Center. Coming back is such an honor. I’ve spoken at other universities but this one carries emotional weight.”

Garcia will speak in Room 106 in the UGLC during Irasema Coronado’s American government class. The lecture is also open to the public.
