Calvin M. Stewart, Ph.D., assistant professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso, has been selected to join the nation’s most innovative young engineering educators at the National Academy of Engineering’s 2015 Frontiers of Engineering Education Symposium.
The Frontiers of Engineering Education (FOEE) is a community of faculty members who are developing and implementing innovative educational approaches in a variety of engineering disciplines. Their annual symposium brings together some of the best engineering educators for a two-and-a-half-day event to share ideas, learn from research and best practices in education and leave with a charter to bring about improvement at their home institutions.
“I am excited to participate in symposia,” Stewart said. “It will give me the opportunity to share my project-based, data-driven flipped-classroom teaching paradigm, as well as compare my teaching efforts with those of other experts in the field of engineering education.”
Stewart added that he hopes to bring home ideas that will help him put together a National Science Foundation proposal to develop a summer program that focuses on underrepresented students achieving academic careers in engineering.
Symposium attendees were nominated by fellow engineers or deans and ultimately selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants.
“It is an honor to have faculty of such a high caliber [attending the event],” said Ahsan Choudhuri, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. “It reflects our commitment to the high quality education we provide to our students.”
This year’s FOEE symposium will focus on the “digital classroom” and technology-enhanced curriculum. It takes place Oct. 25-28 in Irvine, California.
