National Security Studies Institute’s Annual National Security Colloquium to Focus on Intelligence Research

UTEP’s National Security Studies Institute, an Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence, will host its annual colloquium March 23-24, 2017 in the Rubin Center Auditorium on The University of Texas at El Paso campus. The event will bring together a distinguished set of scholars and practitioners from five countries to discuss and debate the challenges and opportunities of conducting intelligence research in a post-Sept. 11 world.

Thursday, March 23: “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Intelligence Research” (8:30 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.): Leading intelligence scholar Mark Phythian (University of Leicester) will open the colloquium with a keynote address, followed by panels that explore how history, decision sciences and other disciplines can contribute to intelligence research, as well as a panel on the sources of data for intelligence studies.

Friday, March 24: “Translating Research for Policy and Practice” (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.): William Inboden, executive director of the Clements Center for National Security (The University of Texas at Austin), will open the second day with a keynote address. Panels will examine the gap between academia and the world of intelligence and showcase exemplary interdisciplinary student research in security and intelligence.

All UTEP students with a general interest in national security, and local and regional members of the National Security Enterprise, are encouraged to attend one or both days.

The event is free and open to the public. RSVP at sjcoulthart@utep.edu.
