National Voice to Share Impact of U.S. Immigration During UTEP Lecture

What: Stephen A. Briganti, president and CEO of The Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation Inc., will discuss the relevant history of American immigration as part of UTEP’s Centennial Lecture series.

Stephen A. Briganti, a longtime consultant in the fields of history and museum management, will talk about “Ellis Island as a Symbol for all American Immigration” during a Centennial Lecture at The University of Texas at El Paso.

Briganti helped The Statue of Liberty – Ellis Island Foundation Inc. raise almost $700 million from the private sector for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the creation of the National Museum of Immigration. In addition to his fundraising duties, he created the American Immigrant Wall of Honor program to recognize those individuals who assisted with the building of America.

The New York native also has been involved in the enhancements of such buildings as the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., the Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan, and the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian, and activities such as the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. He has spent time in academia serving as a member of the board of trustees at Butler University from 1992 through 2008, where he  was chairman from 1998-2001.

Briganti earned degrees in history and political science from Butler University in 1991. Among his honors is the Friend of History Award presented by the Order of American Historians.

The presentation is the latest in UTEP’s Centennial Lecture Series that invites significant speakers from a wide spectrum of topics to share their points of view about contemporary issues that will affect culture and society. The lecture is free and open to the public.
