Opera UTEP dramatizes a realistic and hilarious speed dating event in its spring production, “Speed Dating Tonight,” written by Michael Ching in 2013.

Opera UTEP has adapted the show to represent what a Borderland speed dating event might be like.

“The opera was originally written in English, but in our version, a few characters speak only Spanish, and others speak Spanglish,” said Opera UTEP Director Cherry Duke. “Our production verges on a ‘flash mob’ with the singers and the audience intermingling. You may not know who the performers are until they start singing!”

Opera UTEP features many of the University’s finest student vocalists.

“This opera blurs the boundaries between opera, musical theater and pop,” Ching said. “It is a true representation of everything you might find at a real speed dating event, including the guy who pretends to be something he’s not to impress the girls, the girl who makes you want to crawl out of your skin, and even your ex!”

Stay after the show to participate in an optional, but real, speed dating event.
