Part of Oregon Street Near UTEP to Close for Trolley Construction

Originally published January 25, 2016

Contractors will temporarily close the right-hand southbound bus lane along Oregon Street from Glory Road to Robinson Avenue starting Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, to perform underground work related to the El Paso Streetcar Project. Crews will upgrade utilities and storm drainage and pour the foundations for the posts that will carry the trolley’s overhead electrical lines. Sidewalks in the project zone will remain open, but there may be brief occasional closures. Motorists who use Oregon are asked to exercise caution.

This phase is expected to last most of the month of February, but the contractor will open all lanes Feb. 15-19 to accommodate workers and fans who will prepare for or attend the Feb. 17 event at Sun Bowl Stadium tied to the visit by Pope Francis to Juárez, Mexico.

Additional work along Oregon Street that could impact traffic near The University of Texas at El Paso, to include the installation of the trolley railing, will be scheduled as the project progresses.
