Recent UTEP Ph.D. Graduate Earns National Education Award

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) will recognize Sheryl Maxsom, Ph.D., with its Hispanic Research Issues SIG Outstanding Dissertation Award during the association’s annual conference April 17, 2015, in Chicago, Illinois.

Maxsom earned her doctoral degree in teaching, learning and culture from The University of Texas at El Paso in May 2014. She retired from her position as principal at Gonzalo and Sofia Garcia Elementary School in Canutillo, Texas, in June 2015, and continues to research social mobility issues among Latinos.

A representative of AERA, the nation’s premier organization in education research, said Maxom’s work “revealed a promising combination of hard work and creative insight into the challenges facing Latino/a education.”
