What: Southwest Emerging Technology Symposium

EL PASO, Texas – Scholars, students and space industry experts will gather for the annual Southwest Emerging Technology Symposium (SETS). The symposium provides career-building opportunities for students from UTEP and across the country in a professional conference setting, connecting these students with researchers, scholars and industry professionals for possible recruitment opportunities.
“SETS is a platform showcasing UTEP’s growing national preeminence in aerospace, additive manufacturing (also known as 3-D printing) and energy engineering research while expanding economic development for the region,” said Ahsan Choudhuri, Ph.D., professor and chair of UTEP’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and symposium organizer.
Sessions include an Aerospace Town Hall on travel to Mars featuring John H. Scott, chief technologist for the Propulsion and Power Division at NASA Johnson Space Center, and Mark Klem, chief of the Chemical and Thermal Propulsion System Branch at the NASA Glenn Research Center; “Fossil Energy Technologies” with Robert Romanosky, Ph.D., of the Department of Energy; “Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company” featuring Nick Gonzales of Lockheed Martin; and an industry formation session with representatives from Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance, and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.
Students from the University’s departments of mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, physics, chemistry, computational science, and industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering will join peers and faculty for technical presentations and poster displays showcasing the latest developments in these critical areas.
“UTEP is on the leading edge of aerospace research and clearly recognizes the effort is a collaborative one where community engagement is critical to regional success,” Choudhuri said. “Endeavors like these synthesize our prospective talent pool and invigorate industry initiatives.”
The symposium started as an annual event in 2011 and is now a recognized regional innovation summit bringing current and emerging experts together to address some of the most significant global technologies. This year’s event is sponsored by Lockheed Martin and Air Liquide.
The event is open to the public. Registration is $15 for students or $20 for professionals and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Attire is business casual. Registration must be completed by emailing sets@utep.edu with the attendee’s name and affiliation.
