The Houston Post declares Texas Western Press director Carl Hertzog the “Texas Gutenberg” for his work producing books as art (Dec. 14, 1951), The governor of Texas appoints three El Paso citizens—Richard Burges, Mayor Tom Lea, and State Senator Claude Hudspeth to a special committee on selecting a new site for the School of Mines following the fire that destroyed the main building at the Fort Bliss site (Dec. 15, 1916), The El Paso Chamber of Commerce announces a plan to spearhead the purchase of the former El Paso Military Institute for use by the School of Mines (Dec. 16, 1913), A year after opening its first computer center, the University opens a second in the lower level of the Administration Building to handle the storage of student and staff records (Dec. 17, 1968), Leaders of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) urge Gov. Preston Smith to meet with students to discuss their grievances following a protest that resulted in the arrest of 34 students (Dec. 18, 1971), The Scientific Club holds its first “bean feed” (Dec. 19, 1919).

Recent Activities
On Campus – UTEP’s 2014 Winter Commencement caps off the Centennial year. Graduates belonging to the Winter 2014 class helped bring The University of Texas at El Paso’s Centennial Year to a close on Saturday, Dec. 13. Approximately 2,300 Miners participated in the day’s three Commencement celebrations. View photos HERE.
UTEP Residence Life coordinated another successful Midnight Breakfast. The tradition is held every semester during final’s week to give students who are busy studying all night the extra boost they need to pass their final exams. View photos HERE.
The El Paso Paralegal Association celebrated UTEP Dec. 11 during their Attorney/Paralegal Luncheon.
