President Robert Vinson authorizes School of Mines Dean Steve Worrell to have Charles Gibson prepare “rough sketches” of buildings for a new campus. Gibson’s designs would be the first to use the Bhutanese style now prevalent in the school’s architecture (Dec. 21, 1916), After twenty-five years of onagain-and-off-again negotiations with the U.S. military, the University of Texas takes receipt of a check for $5,600 from the federal government in consideration for the purchase of the old El Paso Military Institute site of the College of Mines. The Board of Regents and the State of Texas had been seeking $30,000 for the land (Dec. 22, 1941), Eight students travel to Purdue, Indiana, to attend the convention of the National Student Federation of America (Dec. 24, 1938), The annual Sun Bowl game is televised in color live to a nationwide audience. The Wyoming Cowboys defeated the Florida State Seminoles 28- 10 (Dec. 24, 1966), Expansion work on the Sun Bowl stadium is completed in time for the annual Sun Bowl game. The North Carolina Tar Heels upset 8th-ranked Texas Longhorns, 26-10 (Dec. 25, 1982), President Robert Vinson announces that several offers of land have been received on which to relocate the School of Mines, including the site that would become the present location of the University of Texas at El Paso (Dec. 27, 1916)

Recent Activities
Gildan New Mexico Bowl – UTEP’s football team traveled to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the ninth annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl to play against the Utah State Aggies. Utah State would defeat UTEP 21 – 6 on Saturday Dec. 20 at University Stadium. This was UTEP’s first winning season in nine years and ended with a 7-6 record.
