In UTEP History
The U.T. Board of Regents approves the offering of graduate degrees at the College of Mines. The College was the last senior public university in the state of Texas not to offer graduate degrees (Dec. 7, 1940), Students remove an alligator from San Jacinto Plaza and place the creature, who goes by the name of Oscar, in the office of Professor Howard E. Quinn (Dec. 11, 1952), The U.T. Board of Regents approves the appropriation of $735,000 to renovate the Centennial Museum (Dec. 12, 1977), The University announces four new courses designed to help undergraduates pass newly enacted proficiency exams. Freshmen and sophomore students would not be allowed to take upper division courses unless they passed these exams (Dec. 13, 1988)

Recent Activities
On Campus – The students involved with the UTEP Centennial Time Capsule presented the items that have been collected at a showcase in the Centennial Museum on Wednesday, Dec. 3. President Diana Natalicio spoke about the project and the significance of a time capsule during the event. Those in attendance were treated to food and giveaways.
GECU Pickaxe Celebration – The GECU Pickaxe Celebration auction ended Friday, Dec. 5. A dozen acclaimed local artists created pickaxe sculptures in honor of the University of Texas at El Paso’s Centennial Celebration. Bidding for the pickaxes has closed and proceeds will go to the GECU Foundation’s R.C. Morgan Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund supporting UTEP students.
The Centennial Museum is having a holiday sale! Hundreds of items are on sale. All books are 50% off and children’s books are only $1. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
