1967Haskins

With occupancy of campus housing approaching 100 percent, the University announces plans to convert Miners Hall from a resident for children of migrant workers to a student dorm (July 21, 1977), UTEP begins offering a 15-month “fast-track” nursing program to address a critical shortage of nurses throughout Texas (July 23, 2008) TWC announces the hiring of Don Haskins to coach basketball following the sudden resignation of the previous coach, Harold Davis (July 24, 1961).

Recent Activities

On Campus  – More than a dozen children attended Camp Discovery at the Centennial Museum this week. The participants learned about desert plants, and animals, folk life and history, desert fossils – including dinosaurs that roamed in our area! The students also learned about water conservation, recycling and the UTEP Centennial Celebration!

The third “UTEP History” Walking Tour took place on the UTEP campus. Participants were given an expert-led tour of the UTEP campus and learned about the rich history of the buildings and campus.

In the Community –The Border Museum Association concluded the Sixth Annual Museum Scavenger Hunt.  This year’s theme is “Centennial Connections,” in honor of the 100 years of UTEP history. Participants have two months to visit the museums and find the mystery objects. This year’s Hunt includes two dozen museums in the El Paso/Las Cruces/Cd. Juárez border region. The hunt finished on July 20 and winners will be announced on Aug. 9.

Announcements – The El Paso Chihuahuas will be celebrating UTEP’s Centennial with a game night on Aug. 28, 2014. Make sure to purchase your tickets early! Information about ticket costs can be found HERE.

100 @ 100 – Interviews with Barbara Zimbalist (Department of English) and Sara Grineski (Sociology).Tune in this week to hear interviews with Mark Lusk (Social Work, College of Health Sciences) and Thomas Boland (Metallurgical & Materials Engineering).
