In UTEP History
New inner-campus parking restrictions are introduced (June 16, 1993) The U.T. Board of Regents elects Dossie M. Wiggins president of the College of Mines. His appointment is effective September 1 (June 18, 1935) On a 7-2 vote, the U.T. Board of Regents approves the construction of a new $28.8 million library for UTEP. At six stories and 275,000 square feet, the new structure will have the capacity for 1.2 million books. One regent who voted no claimed that every other U.T. would want a new library now that UTEP was getting one (June 18, 1935), Old Main Building reopens after 15 months of renovation. Upgrades included the installation of an elevator, conference room, and the replacement of windows. (June 19, 1996).

Recent Activities
On Campus – Two new exhibitions opened at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center on campus. Rachelle Thiewes: Something Gleams is a site-specific retrospective of the artist Rachelle Thiewes that celebrates her work in the context of the place it was made, here, in the starkly beautiful landscape that has informed her decades-long study of light, movement, order and chaos. The exhibition features work from all stages of her career, and highlights the ways in which her jewelry reflects an intimate relationship with the Chihuahuan desert she calls home. Ignite: The Artistic
and Educational Heritage of Gaspar Enriquez is an intimate look into the artists who influenced and informed the artistic and cultural heritage of Chicano artist Gaspar Enriquez. The Rubin Center is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Peter Michael Monti, Ph.D. – Donald G. Millar Distinguished Professor of Alcohol and Addiction Studies and Director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at Brown University was on campus to give a lecture titled, “The Role of Alcohol in the Prevention and Treatment of Sex Risk Behavior and HIV.” The lecture was sponsored by the Department of Public Health Sciences.
In the Community – The Border Museum Association continues the Sixth Annual Museum Scavenger Hunt. This year’s theme is “Centennial Connections,” in honor of the 100 years of UTEP history. Participants have two months to visit the museums and find the mystery objects. This year’s Hunt includes two dozen museums in the El Paso/Las Cruces/Cd. Juárez border region.
