In UTEP History

Alumni gather for the first time to discuss the creation of a formal ex-students association (Nov. 18, 1932), Harry Van Surdam, superintendent of the El Paso Military Institute, meets with Gov. Oscar Colquitt and William B. Phillips, the director of U.T.’s Bureau of Economic Geology, to discuss the El Paso Military Institute site for a state school of mines (Nov. 21, 1912), The first “M” is painted in the side of Franklin Mountain. Various citizen’s groups write Dean John Kidd expressing their displeasure with the act as they considered it an act of vandalism (Nov. 21, 1923), The U.T. Board of Regents authorizes the erection of a temporary structure at the El Paso Military Institute site to allow studies to continue at the School of Mines following the Oct. 29 fire that destroyed the main building (Nov. 22, 1916).

Recent Activities

On Campus – The University of Texas at El Paso’s Military Student Success Center collaborated with numerous campus agencies to organize activities for Veterans Appreciation Week.  A Veterans Appreciation Event at Union Plaza kicked off the week of festivities. The University also minted a special Centennial coin that was presented to veterans in attendance.  The Military Times also named UTEP one of its Best for Vets colleges for 2015.

UTEP’s Department of Music held another Percussion Ensemble and Pandemonium concert at the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall along with another Symphonic Winds concert.  Make plans to attend their Jazz concert this week and a Holiday Revels Choral Celebration on Nov. 23 and 25.

Broadcast journalist and author Lisa Napoli spoke at UTEP on Nov. 12, to discuss the life-changing experiences she encountered while setting up a radio station in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

Dozens were in attendance as the Student Recreation Center celebrated UTEP’s Centennial with “100 Minutes of Fitness” on campus Nov. 12. Participants also received a free towel and t-shirt.

Graduate students displayed their cutting-edge research at the Graduate Student Research  Expo on Nov. 14 at the Hilton Garden Inn.

UTEP Athletics held their Centennial Weekend Nov. 14 – 15 with the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams opened their season with a double header and the Football team winning over North Texas making them bowl eligible.   Fans were able to attend all three games for the price of one.  Players named to UTEP’s Centennial Teams also made their way back to the campus to sign autographs and meet fans. The 23 players in UTEP football, men’s and women’s basketball history were voted into their respective sports by fans.

Upcoming Events –President Diana Natalicio and The Department of Chemistry cordially invite you to attend a UTEP Centennial Lecture “Chemistry in Nano and Outer Space” by Professor Sir Harry Kroto on Nov. 25 at 4 p.m. at the UGLC on campus.

UTEP’s Forensics Program is holding their fall “Speech and Debate Team Centennial Showcase and Alumni Reunion” on Nov. 25.

GECU Pickaxe Celebration – The GECU Pickaxe Celebration auction continues until Dec. 5. A dozen acclaimed local artists created pickaxe sculptures in honor of the University of Texas at El Paso’s Centennial Celebration. The pickaxes are now up for auction and proceeds will go to the GECU Foundation’s R.C. Morgan Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund supporting UTEP students. For a link to the auction site click here.

Centennial Stories – Three Centennial Stories this week including, The Military Student Success Center, Victor Medina, Graduate Student and Veteran and the 2014 International Food Fair.

100 @ 100 – Interviews with Michael Zarate (Psychology) Art Duval (Mathematical Sciences). Tune in this week to hear interviews with Chintalapalle Ramana (Mechanical Engineering).
