In UTEP History
The Miners men’s cross-country team wins the national championship, beating the team from Providence by over 90 points (Nov. 23, 1981), The Alumni Association announces its plan to fund a holiday light display on campus. Known as Season of Lights, the display will involve use of up to 4000 luminaires (Nov. 23, 1993), A group of local investors led by Vernon Ware purchase one hundred and fifty acres of land above Mundy Heights and the old Fort Bliss along the Rio Grande. This land will become the site of the present location of The University of Texas at El Paso (Nov. 24, 1916), News of the death of School of Mines’ student Lt. James “Buster” Biggs reaches his family in El Paso. The U.S. Army later names Biggs Field after the World War I aviator (Nov. 25, 1918), The acronym “UTEP” appears for the first time in the national media when the New York Times publishes an account of the Miners football team victory over Utah, 28-8. (Nov. 26, 1967), The first mention of the establishment of a New Year’s “Sun Bowl” game in El Paso to rival the Rose Bowl appears in the El Paso Herald-Post (Nov. 27, 1934), Robert E. Vinson is inaugurated as president of the University of Texas and the School of Mines (Nov. 29, 1916).
Recent Activities
On Campus – A three-hour professional development event titled “Coffee, Tea and Careers” was hosted by the Women in Business Association. Approximately 100 people listened to successful business women who shared their life experience, growth and development in their field. See photos HERE.
The International Education Expo was held on Nov. 19.

GECU Pickaxe Celebration – The GECU Pickaxe Celebration auction continues until Dec. 5. A dozen acclaimed local artists created pickaxe sculptures in honor of the University of Texas at El Paso’s Centennial Celebration. The pickaxes are now up for auction and proceeds will go to the GECU Foundation’s R.C. Morgan Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund supporting UTEP students. For a link to the auction site click here.
