In UTEP History

Robert E. Vinson is inaugurated as president of the University of Texas and the School of Mines (Nov. 29, 1916), Don Haskins chalks up his first win as coach of the men’s basketball team, defeating Iowa State 66-59 in Iowa (Dec. 2, 1961), Thirty-four students are arrested outside the Administration Building at a protest to bring awareness to issues affecting Hispanic students (Dec. 3, 1971), MALDEF files suit against the State of Texas and the higher education system alleging regional discrimination against South Texas and

border institutions. The suit is known as LULAC v. Clements, later LULAC v. Richards (Dec. 3, 1987), An election for student government held this day was later challenged as being unethical when several candidates served as poll workers. Leading the challenge was Ruben Salazar, who later would go on to noted career in journalism (Dec. 4, 1947), The Miners football team play their first game outside of the continental United States as they travel to Honolulu to play the University of Hawaii (Dec. 4, 1948), The College of Mines receives accreditation as an independent institution for the first time as it is accepted for membership into the Southern Association of College and Secondary Schools (Dec. 5, 1936). Learn more in the UTEP Encyclopedia.

Recent Activities

On Campus – UTEP’s Department of Music held two concerts this week.  The “Holiday Revels Choral Celebration” concerts concluded performances held by the Department of Music for the fall semester.

Nobel laureate Sir Harry Kroto delivered a Centennial Lecture titled “Chemistry in Nano and Outer Space” in the Undergraduate Learning Center on the UTEP Campus on Nov. 25, 2014. To view photos click HERE.

The UTEP Speech and Debate Team held its Centennial Alumni Reunion and Championship Showcase on Nov. 25.  Members of the Speech and Debate Team performed some of their award-winning pieces and also reconnected with UTEP alumni.

FINAL WEEK IN THE GECU Pickaxe Celebration – The GECU Pickaxe Celebration auction continues until this Friday, Dec. 5. A dozen acclaimed local artists created pickaxe sculptures in honor of the University of Texas at El Paso’s Centennial Celebration. The pickaxes are now up for auction and proceeds will go to the GECU Foundation’s R.C. Morgan Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund supporting UTEP students. For a link to the auction site click here.
