In UTEP History

The State School of Mines an Metallurgy begins formal instruction for the first time and the first practice by the football team is held (Sept. 28, 1914) Don Haskins is inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (Sept. 29, 1997),John W. Kidd becomes the dean of
the school after serving ten months as acting dean (Oct. 1, 1923), UTEP’s first website is uploaded to the World Wide Web (Oct. 1, 1996), The women’s volleyball team play their first match (Oct. 4, 1974).

Recent Activities

On Campus – Thousands participated in the Glory Road Glow Run on Sept. 27.  The 5K run was presented by GECU and led runners through the UTEP campus while wearing glow in the dark attire and accessories.

The UTEP Symphony Orchestra performed the first of several concerts this fall in the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall.

An exhibit of Original Pencil Sketches by Jose Cisneros opened on the Fourth floor of the UTEP Library.  Exhibits Ignite by Gaspar Enriquez and Something Gleams by Rachelle Thiewes also closed at the Gerald and Stanlee Rubin Center for the Visual Arts.

Make Plans: Homecoming Week Kicks off on Oct. 5. Make plans to attend the festivities related to Homecoming that week.

The Institute of Real Estate Management is holding their 19th Annual Golf Tournament Oct. 8 at Butterfield Trail. Proceeds will benefit UTEP and local real estate agents. Click on the IREM logo for more information and to register online.

Centennial Celebration Postmark Day is set for Oct. 10. The United States Postal Service has officially created a postmark in honor of UTEP’s Centennial Celebration that will be available to the public on Oct. 10 The UTEP community is invited to participate in this once in a lifetime event.

Centennial Stories – Welcome back week 2014.

100 @ 100 – Interviews with  James Becvar (Chemistry) and Carl Dirk (Chemistry). Tune in this week to hear interviews with Bill Robertson, aka “Dr. Skateboard” (Teacher Education) and George Di Giovanni (UT Health Science Center at Houston School).
