Heather Mawson, a senior studio art student at The University of Texas at El Paso, has been selected as a recipient of the 2016 University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Student Awards in Arts and Humanities.
Two students were selected for the honor from the UT System’s eight academic institutions from a number of nominations in the 2-D and 3-D categories.
The UT System will award $1,500 in Mawson’s name to the UTEP department of her choice. Mawson said her $1,500 will go toward the sculpture concentration in the art department.
Mawson’s achievement will be recognized at the UT System Board of Regents’ meeting May 12 in Austin.
“Overall, my experience with this came down to the professors I’ve had helping me and the University allowing those professors to not just be teachers but also mentors,” Mawson said.
Mawson’s submission included 10 entries.
The UT System Board of Regents in 2012 approved the establishment of the Regents’ Outstanding Student Awards in Arts and Humanities to recognize student achievement in the areas of the musical arts, the visual arts and creative writing. The specific area for recognition varies each year.
The awards program is designed to provide a framework that fosters excellence in student performance, rewards outstanding students, stimulates the arts and humanities, and promotes continuous quality in education.
