Faculty and staff from the College of Health Sciences will spread cheer to older residents in permanent housing at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless this holiday.

The college is accepting contributions to refurbish a room in one of the Opportunity Center’s permanent living facilities that houses residents between 55 and 90 years old who are elderly, sick or disabled.

College representatives will donate the funds to the Opportunity Center on Friday, Dec. 12, during the college’s annual end of semester holiday celebration.

The room renovation will include a new twin size mattress and box spring, linens, pillow, curtains, blinds and other amenities.

During the 2014 fall semester, UTEP established a new learning partnership between the Opportunity Center and the Department of Social Work that provides graduate social work students with educational opportunities to help homeless persons reintegrate into the community.

In November, the University hosted the first Paso del Norte Region State of the Homeless Conference, in conjunction with the Opportunity Center and other partner organizations.
