UTEP Dance Department to Conduct Virtual Classes at Mesita Elementary

What: UTEP Department of Dance to present classes to elementary school students

When: 12 – 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 31

Where: Mesita Elementary School Library

UTEP Dance Department Head Lisa Smith will lead a presentation involving classes at Mesita Elementary School and dance students from The University of Texas at El Paso.

In partnership with the elementary school and its librarian, Carolyn Rhoades, Smith and her students will lead the children in movement improv classes with a focus on The Trials of Pobrero El Campesino annual show that the UTEP dance department will stage Feb. 7-16 at UTEP’s Wise Family Theatre. Media nights for that performance will be held at 8 p.m. Feb. 5 and 6.

UTEP ballet dancers in their full Trials of Pobrero El Campesino costumes will be video conferenced into the Mesita library as they perform pieces from the show under Smith’s direction. Students in Smith’s Pedagogy of Dance class will be exposed to valuable hands-on teaching experience.

Smith eventually will include this project in a larger presentation about collaboration between classrooms and the arts.
