The Texas College of Reading and Learning Association (TxCRLA) announced that The University of Texas at El Paso’s Denise Lujan is its 2016 Developmental Educator of the Year.

The organization selected Lujan, director of UTEP’s Developmental Math Program, for her outstanding contributions that benefit students, faculty and the association. The department assists underprepared students to be successful at college-level math through technology, interventions and creative course design.

“I am unbelievably appreciative and honored to be recognized,” said Lujan, who has worked with the program for 15 years and been in charge since 2007. “TxCRLA is filled with experts from our field across Texas, many of whom I admire and look to for advice. For them to honor me and recognize my work humbles me and makes me very, very proud.”

Lujan will be recognized during the 35th annual CASP (College Academic Support Programs) Conference Oct. 16-18, 2016, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The honoree is a native of Memphis, Texas. Her father was a farmer and her mother worked in the title business. The first-generation college student earned her Master of Education degree in education administration from UTEP in 2008. She is a member of the National Association of Developmental Education and recently completed her term as secretary on the group’s executive board.
