UTEP MEDIA TIP SHEET – WEEK OF DEC. 1, 2014

Story Idea:

UTEP Public Health Students to Conduct Health Screenings

With the support of a $300,000 grant from the City of El Paso, students in the Master of Public Health Program at UTEP are conducting comprehensive health screenings of 900 uninsured families.

Since October, student-researchers under the direction of Rodrigo X. Armijos, M.D., Sc.D., associate professor of public health sciences, have been visiting public housing complexes and recreation centers to conduct evidence-based screenings for obesity, cardiorespiratory disease and environmental exposures in low-income households. The data will be shared with El Paso’s Department of Public Health and other scientific professionals.

The screenings are conducted each week Thursday-Saturday. This week, screenings will take place on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Munoz Apartments at 10040 Audobon; Friday, Dec. 5, at the Sandoval Apartments at 5353 Ridge St.; and Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Truman Apartments, 7919 Meraz Ave. Times are to be determined.

Teacher Job Fair Set for Dec. 5 at UTEP

Approximately 25 school districts from around the region and the state will recruit teachers, specialists and administrators during UTEP’s annual College of Education Teacher Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the Don Haskins Center.

Several hundred people are expected to attend this event that is open to current students, recent graduates and members of the community who have teaching credentials.

Event organizers decided to open the fall teacher job fair to outside districts this year because of the high demand for administrators, counselors and bilingual and special education teachers during a similar event last spring.
