Open House to Give Prospective Students a Crash Course in All Things UTEP

High school students and their families are invited to soak up the energy and excitement of college life at UTEP’s Orange and Blue Day from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. Prospective students will find out what it means to be a Miner by touring the campus, meeting current students and exploring each academic college.

The free event, which is held in the spring, is based in UTEP’s Union Building East. After signing in, visitors will be able to meet with representatives from admissions, scholarships and financial aid. They will also get an overview of UTEP’s academic programs, student success initiatives, undergraduate research opportunities and student life, all while learning why UTEP is ranked #1 in the nation for improving the social mobility of its graduates.

Future Student Leaders to Participate in Third Annual 21st Century Scholars

UTEP has selected 129 students to participate in the fourth annual 21st Century Scholars Program from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Tomás Rivera Conference Center on the third floor of UTEP’s Union Building East.

Students named as Century Scholars will go through a day of programming with an emphasis on essential career skills including communication in a professional setting, networking, self-promotion and working in a collaborative setting.

UTEP created the scholars program in 2012 to spark leadership and develop career skills among an array of students who are then expected to share the information among their many campus clubs and organizations.

Opening reception for the exhibit “Authentic Texas: People of the Big Bend”

The exhibit “Authentic Texas: People of the Big Bend” is based on the 2013 award-winning book by the same title (University of Texas Press), featuring the photography of Bill Wright and stories by Wright and Marcia Hatfield Daudistel.

Wright and Daudistel spent more than two years interviewing and photographing residents of the Big Bend region – one of the most sparsely settled areas in the United States – to see what drew people to these rural areas in the vast Chihuahuan Desert, and more importantly, what kept them there. The two authors discovered “the reasons for making this part of West Texas home are as varied as the people themselves.”

The book is the recipient of the 2014 Southwest Book Award by the Border Regional Library Association.

The exhibit “Authentic Texas” will feature beautiful landscapes of the Big Bend area and stunning portraits and stories of the people who live there. The exhibit consists of photographs and stories included in the book, as well as previously unpublished material. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the museum’s Gift Shop.

Dreamscapes: A Multimedia Dance Event — Faculty and Staff Night

Inspiration for this new production is taken from the work of visual artists such as Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali and Remedios Varo, as well as writings from William Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe. The combination of original, contemporary choreography by UTEP dance faculty with design by UTEP’s technical theatre program, the office of Academic Technologies and University-based visual artists and musicians will create a unique blend of artistic collaboration around the theme of our innermost existence, the dreamscape. Under the artistic direction of Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance Andrea Vazquez, this evening-long work will explore different manifestations of dreams in our waking, sleeping and subconscious lives.

Individual tickets are $13 for adults; $11 for UTEP faculty and staff, seniors, military, non-UTEP students, groups (10+) and UTEP alumni with card; and $9 for UTEP students and children (4-12 years old).

For Faculty and Staff Night, UTEP faculty and staff with valid ID are eligible for a buy-one-get-one-free offer.
