UTEP Recognized by Prestigious Educational Entities

The University of Texas at El Paso has been ranked among the top universities for Hispanic students in two recent publications.

In a report released May 18, The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine ranked UTEP No. 2 in the nation for total bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics. The University moved up from No. 4 in 2014.

In a separate ranking, nonprofit organization Excelencia in Education listed UTEP as No. 1 in the country for awarding doctoral degrees to Latinos in health professions or related programs. Of the 13 doctoral degrees awarded by the College of Health Sciences and School of Nursing in 2012-13, 10 went to Hispanic students, according to the report “Finding Your Workforce: Latinos in Health” published in April 2015.

Spotlight:

Movies on the Lawn Free Summer Movie Series Begins Friday

Returning for the program’s fifth season, Movies on the Lawn will premiere with the showing of “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Kidd Field.

All films are free to the public and shown on an 18-foot inflatable screen.

The Movies on the Lawn series has been growing in popularity since it began in 2011.

All films begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. or as determined by sunset. Movies scheduled are “101 Dalmatians” Friday, May 29; “Cinderella” Friday, June 5; “Space Jam” Friday, June 12; and “Home” Saturday, June 20.

Business Announcement:

John “Danny” Olivas, Ph.D., UTEP director of space initiatives and former NASA astronaut, has been invited to join the Journal of Space Safety Engineering as a field editor.

The Journal of Space Safety Engineering is a quarterly publication of the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety. It provides information in space safety design, research and development and seeks to establish channels of communication between industry, academy and government in space safety and related environmental issues.

As a field editor, Olivas will review papers submitted for publication in the journal.

In addition to his position as director of space intiatives, Olivas leads UTEP’s Center for the Advancement of Space Safety and Mission Assurance Research, or CASSMAR. The center is focused on risk reduction research to make commercial human spaceflight safe and successful.

One of the most popular Disney movies of all times and based on the books of P.L. Travers, “Mary Poppins” has delighted Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances.

The menu for this performance includes chicken cordon bleu, oven-browned potatoes, french-style green beans, garden salad with house dressing, snowflake dinner rolls, coffee, iced tea and a supercalifragalistic ice cream sundae.
