UTEP Celebrates National Nurses Week with City Proclamation, Nursing Leadership Conference

The UTEP School of Nursing will kick off its annual celebration on Tuesday, May 5, when the El Paso City Council will proclaim the week of May 6 – 12, 2015, as National Nurses Week in the City of El Paso during its regular public meeting at 8 a.m. at City Hall, 300 N. Campbell.

Health care professionals from across the Paso del Norte region will converge at UTEP to talk about diversity in the nursing workforce as part of National Nurses Week 2015 at the UTEP School of Nursing.

Fun, Informative Events Fill UTEP’s Military Appreciation Week

UTEP will recognize its military-affiliated students for their service and sacrifice during the university’s third annual Military Appreciation Week Monday, May 4, through Saturday, May 9.

A formal kickoff will take place at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, in the Union Plaza to include speeches, an opportunity to write a “Thank You” note to deployed service personnel, and a performance by the 1st Armored Division Band as part of UTEP’s High Noon music series.

Highlights include the “Soldier for a Day” activity from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, May 4 at the Liberal Arts Building lawn, where guests can see, feel and taste what it is like to wear a Kevlar helmet, sit in a Humvee, strap on a 45-pound rucksack and eat an MRE (Meals Ready to Eat).

Military Appreciation Week 2015 — Discussion Panel and Film Presentation “American Sniper”

As part of Military Appreciation Week 2015, the Office of Student Life at The University of Texas at El Paso presents a discussion panel and film presentation of “American Sniper,” rated R, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6 in the Union Cinema, located on the first floor of Union Building East. The discussion panel begins at 6 p.m. and the film starts at 7:15 p.m.

The discussion panel “Living and Witnessing PTSD” will be moderated by Jorge A. Marquez, Ph.D., clinical counselor at the University Counseling Center. Panelists will include Tiffany Henley, a UTEP employee and military spouse, Krista Lane, a UTEP student veteran; Nicholas Tofilon, a counselor at El Paso Vet Center; Corene Seymour, a Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS) representative; and Brandt Smith, a student veteran and representative of The Society of Military Psychology.

Tickets are $2 for general admission and free with a valid military ID. Concessions will be available. The venue is ADA accessible and the film will have Closed Captioning.

“Mary Poppins” — Discount Dinner Performance

The musical “Mary Poppins” runs April 17 – May 17. One of the most popular Disney movies of all time and based on the books of P.L. Travers, “Mary Poppins” has delighted Broadway audiences for more than 2,500 performances.

The menu for this performance includes chicken cordon bleu, oven-browned potatoes, french-style green beans, garden salad with house dressing, snowflake dinner rolls, coffee, iced tea, and a supercalifragalistic ice cream sundae.

Discount dinner performances are $41.50 for adults; $39.50 for children 4 – 12 years old and for non-UTEP students; and $31.50 for UTEP students who may purchase one ticket at this price. With a valid ID, UTEP faculty, staff and alumni association members, groups of 20+ and military personnel may purchase up to four tickets for $39.50.
