The Coordinating Board received 33 nominations and 28 applications for this year’s Star Award program.

Nobel Laureate to Present Centennial Lecture at UTEP

Sir Harry Kroto, Ph.D., a Nobel laureate in chemistry, will deliver a Centennial Lecture titled “Chemistry in Nano and Outer Space” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25 at UTEP’s Undergraduate Learning Center, room 106.

Kroto has conducted research that is said to have revolutionized the modern world, giving rise to the era of nanotechnology.

He shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry after discovering one of the world’s first nanoparticles: buckminsterfullerenes, or “buckyballs.” Because of their unique properties, the nanoparticles are now being studied for applications in drug delivery and solar energy.

For his service to science, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1996. He currently serves at the Francis Eppes Professor of Chemistry at Florida State University.

In 2014, The University of Texas at El Paso is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy. The Centennial Lecture Series invites noteworthy speakers to the UTEP campus to share their perspectives on a broad range of contemporary issues that are likely to impact our society, culture and lives in the years ahead.

The lecture, which is sponsored by UTEP President Diana Natalicio and the UTEP Department of Chemistry, is free and open to the public.
