UTEP Partners with Mexican Research Institutions to Promote Gender Equality

What: The University of Texas at El Paso will sign a collaboration agreement with the Universidad Autónoma de México Centro de Investigaciones Interdiscplinarias en Ciencias y Humanidades and the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social

Where: President’s Conference Room, UTEP Administration Building, 5th floor

UTEP President Diana Natalicio and representatives from the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM) Centro de Investigaciones Interdiscplinarias en Ciencias y Humanidades and the Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Superiores en Antropología Social (CIESAS) will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create a network of institutions that will establish the Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos International Program for the study of violence, gender and peace.

Lagarde is an anthropologist, scholar and one of the most influential feminist voices in Latin America and the Spanish-speaking world. She is a professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Graduate School.

UTEP, UNAM and CIESAS will collaborate with the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, the Fundación Guatemala and The University of Texas at Austin to continue Lagarde’s legacy and strengthen scholarship in the humanities through research, teaching and political impact around the topic of gender violence, specifically against girls, women and at risk women’s groups.
