AcademyHealth, a leading national organization serving the fields of health services and policy research, announced Nora Hernandez as one of 10 community health leaders selected for its Population Health Scholarship Program, made possible with support from The Kresge Foundation.

Hernandez is a program manager at UTEP for a grant from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a Master of Business Administration from UTEP.

“It is an honor to have been selected for this scholarship and represent the Paso del Norte region,” Hernandez said. “I will continue the precedent of other community/regional leaders demonstrating and showcasing the positive impact of our efforts at national and binational levels.”

This program will provide the individuals a chance to attend the 2017 AcademyHealth National Health Policy Conference (NHPC). Through attending the NHPC and related policy and learning sessions, the scholars will be immersed in the health policymaking process, introduced to the top priorities of health policymakers, and armed with resources and leadership skills to catalyze change in their communities.

“We know that communities can be incubators for testing and innovation,” said Kate Papa, director of AcademyHealth’s public and population health program. “We are looking forward to collaborating with this year’s incredibly dynamic scholars to support the sharing of knowledge and strategies for community-driven change.”

An advisory committee comprised of leaders in health policy, public health, and community and population health selected the scholars through a competitive process.
