Graduate School
Graduate studies arrived at UTEP in 1938 when the College of Mines and Metallurgy offered graduate credit for certain courses beyond the baccalaureate degree through a special arrangement with the University of Texas in Austin. In June 1941, the College began offering their own graduate study courses toward a Master of Arts degree in education, English, and history, and awarded its first M.A. degree in 1942 to three students. A Graduate Council was designated in 1948, followed by the creation of the Graduate Division in 1950. In 1964, the Graduate Division briefly became part of a UT system-wide Graduate School with degrees conferred by the University of Texas, with local control reverting to UTEP in 1970. In 1979, UTEP awarded its first doctoral degree, to Gary Massingill for his dissertation in geological sciences. Today, UTEP’s Graduate School offers over 76 master’s and 20 doctoral programs to a diverse student body of more than 3,300.

College of Engineering
The first 28 students who enrolled at the State School of Mines and Metallurgy in September 1914 established the engineering tradition that defines UTEP to this very day. Since UTEP’s founding as a technology school 100 years ago, the engineering program endeavored to serve the unique needs of the Paso del Norte region. An early professor and dean of the school, John W. “Cap” Kidd, exemplified the concept of the engineer as a public servant, who was adequately prepared to share the benefits of technology with all citizens for the betterment of the bi-national region. As UTEP grew as a university, so too did the prestige of the College of Engineering. Today, the College of Engineering boasts more than 120 faculty and staff in 6 academic departments and more than 15 state-of-the-art laboratories and research centers. Academic departments include civil, computer science, electrical, industrial, mechanical, and metallurgical and materials engineering. Since its founding, UTEP has remained a leader in the education of engineers, ranked in the top five schools in the continental U.S. in awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics, and was recently named the No.1 graduate engineering school for Hispanics in the country. The legacy of the engineer defines UTEP’s traditions today, from athletics (Miners) to the University’s newspaper (The Prospector). UTEP’s College of Engineering as UTEP’s oldest school continues to exemplify the proud traditions that provided UTEP its unique mining heritage still celebrated today.

College of Liberal Arts
Despite UTEP’s origins as a technology school, the first dean of the School of Mines and Metallurgy, Steve H. Worrell, recognized the importance of liberal arts as part of the core curriculum for engineers. Dean Worrell, himself very familiar with the unique requirements of the Paso del Norte region having worked in the region for several years, required all engineering students to study Spanish. To teach this course, Worrell hired one of the school’s first students, Raul Ramon Barberena, making Barberena the first Hispanic instructor in the University of Texas System. The School of Mines continued to add liberal arts courses up through 1927, when the school, to better meet the needs of the state’s fastest growing city, transformed into a general college, creating a division of arts and sciences alongside the school of engineering. In 1932, the liberal arts program graduated its first class of majors, and within a year surpassed the number of engineering graduates. Liberal arts went on to become the largest college at UTEP in 1966 when it separated from the School of Arts and Sciences. Today, the College of Liberal Arts provides students access to 130 undergraduate degrees, 20 master’s programs and 3 doctoral programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and the arts.

Science has always played an important role at UTEP, as mining schools were the traditional science and technology institutions of their day. As part of the original curriculum of the State School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1914, mining students studied chemistry, geology, mathematics, and physics. The school’s first dean, Steve H. Worrell, himself a chemist of noteworthy achievement, co-authored a book on the fuels of Texas. Following the school’s transformation into a general college in 1927, biological science was added and, by 1943, the program offered Bachelor of Science degrees in addition to the Bachelor of Arts in science first offered in 1932. In 1966, the School of Science formed out of the School of Arts and Sciences, becoming the College of Science in 1975. Today, the College of Science consists of 10 departments and programs, and offers baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral training. Each year, more than 2,000 students seek the inspiration and training provided by the College to become the next generation of scientists and mathematicians.

College of Education
With the arrival of compulsory education in Texas in the early 1920s for all children, cities across Texas had to respond to the demand for trained teachers. This demand provided in part the driving force that transformed the College of Mines and Metallurgy into a general college in 1927, given the school’s distance from other teacher training schools in the state and the region’s rapidly growing population. The state legislature approved a budget increase that allowed the school to add an education curriculum in 1927 following the dissolution of the teacher-training program run by the El Paso School District. Dean Charles A. Puckett, a graduate of Harvard University’s graduate education program, assumed the leadership of the School of Mines, and, working with local school officials, ensured that the school would meet the community’s need for exceptional teachers. In 1933, when the College of Mines’ Division of Arts and Sciences, graduated its first class under its new Bachelor of Arts program, one of the recipients was an education major. In 1967, the School of Education emerged from the reorganization of the School of Arts and Sciences, and became the College of Education in 1975. Today, the College of Education consists of three departments preparing more than 2,000 students each year to serve as faculty for elementary, middle school, high school, junior college, and university classrooms.

In its first year, the 1914 catalog of the State School of Mines and Metallurgy required all engineering students to take a business course, known then as Economics of Mining and Mine Management. In 1927, following UTEP’s transformation into a general college, a full-fledged department of business administration came into existence under the direction of Abi Elizabeth Beynon, the first female department head in UTEP’s history. Today, the College of Business Administration’s undergraduate program leads to the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree and the BBA in Accounting, as well as a graduate program that offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master of Accountancy (M. Acc.). The College of Business Administration is accredited by the AACSB International—the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and – is one of the leading programs educating Hispanic business professionals in the nation.

School of Nursing
One of the oldest programs of higher education in El Paso belongs to the training of nursing professionals. In 1898, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul established the Hotel Dieu School of Nursing several blocks east of UTEP’s current location. In 1970, an act of the Texas State Legislature authorized the University of Texas System to purchase Hotel Dieu and establish it as a baccalaureate program under the auspices of a system-wide nursing program. In 1976, the University of Texas Board of Regents transferred the school to The University of Texas at El Paso, creating the College of Nursing. In 1979, the University placed health sciences and medical technology under the College, renaming it the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. In September 2006, further reorganization created a separate and independent School of Nursing. Today, the School of Nursing offers both bachelor’s and master’s programs, with a student body of more than 700 students. In 2011, the School admitted the first cohort of doctoral students into the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

College of Health Sciences
The College of Health Sciences is the newest college but has some distant roots to the founding of the school. With the establishment of the State School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1914, students studying mining engineering were required to take courses in first aid. One of the earliest instructors at the school, Dr. Burt Franklin Jenness, M.D., later went on to head the school’s Biology Department, remaining with the school through his retirement in 1957, and became the first faculty member to have his scholarly work accepted for publication. After its transformation into a general college in 1927 and through to the 1960s, UTEP maintained a premedical program within its science departments. This program and its offshoots, health science and medical technology, merged and became a part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences in 1979. In 2004, the University created the College of Health Sciences along with a separate School of Nursing. Today, more than 70 percent of the College of Health Sciences’ graduates choose to remain in the Paso del Norte region, serving the community as health professionals in the fields of clinical laboratory science, kinesiology, social work, public health, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, rehabilitation counseling and pharmacy. The College offers professional training from the baccalaureate to the doctoral level.
