UTEP Students Schedule Science, Math Party at Insights Museum

What: UTEP students share fun aspects of science and math during their free STEM Fest.

 When: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016

Where: Insights Science Museum, 521 Tays St.

The community is invited to watch students from The University of Texas at El Paso bring science and math to life during the free STEM Fest.

Visitors to the open house can explore the night sky from inside a giant tent, examine how mountains are created using an Augmented Reality Sandbox, and find out about the heartiness of arctic species and the physics of figure skating. There also will be a special performance by UTEP’s Larry Lesser, Ph.D., professor of mathematical sciences and an award-winning composer, at 2:30 p.m.

The presenters are part of a National Science Foundation-funded Robert Noyce Scholarships for Teaching Miners grant, which trains future secondary teachers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

“We want to show how much fun math and science can be,” said Amy Wagler, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematical sciences and the program’s principal investigator. “We invite people of all ages to come and enjoy themselves. They may learn something, too, if they’re not careful.”

Wagler said she hopes the event spurs renewed interest in STEM ideas at the planned El Paso Children’s Museum.
