What: 11th Science and Engineering Extravaganza

The student chapter of UTEP’s Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (MAES/SHPE) and the College of Engineering will host the 11th Science and Engineering Extravaganza 2015 at The University of Texas at El Paso.
This annual event will bring together approximately 350 high school students from the El Paso area and 130 UTEP volunteers for an exciting day of exhibits, hands-on activities and motivational presentations to spark the students’ interest in pursuing careers in technical fields.
“The MAES/SHPE Student Chapter is determined to increase STEM awareness while giving back to the El Paso community, and this is by far the best way to merge them together,” said MAES/SHPE President Aileen Tapia.
Students will learn the steps they need to take in high school to prepare for majors in science, technology, engineering and math – or STEM – fields in college. The program includes hands-on activities given by engineering and science student organizations, presentations from STEM-related businesses and special workshops on technology.
The MAES/SHPE 11th Science and Engineering Extravaganza is made possible by platinum sponsor Time Warner Cable and sponsorships from El Paso Electric, the UTEP Student Government Association, Community en Accion and the U.S Navy.
Speaking at the event will be Richard Shoephoerster, Ph.D., dean of UTEP’s College of Engineering, and immediate past national MAES/SHPE president Mike Acosta.
MAES and SHPE were founded in 1974 to increase the number of Mexican-Americans and other Hispanics in the technical and scientific fields. MAES conducts engineering and science extravaganzas across the U.S., hosted by the MAES student chapters.
