UTEP to Present 2-Day Women’s History Month Conference

The University of Texas at El Paso chapter of Iota, Iota, Iota (Triota), a national Women’s Studies Honor Society, will present its 5th Annual Women’s History Month conference on April 1-2, 2015.

Nearly 450 people have pre-registered for the conference, which is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in registering can do so at http://whm.iss.utep.edu/.

The 2015 conference theme, “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives,” yielded a record number of proposals.

“Conference attendees will see the many ways in which UTEP faculty and students collaborate in research, and how faculty mentor students in their research and writing,” said Lee Ann Elliott Westman, Ph.D., visiting professor in humanities and women’s studies.

Five concurrent sessions will take place the mornings of Wednesday, April 1, and Thursday, April 2. More than 50 presenters will speak about topics ranging from women in the ancient world to women in the arts and technology to women in contemporary culture. Many of the presenters are UTEP faculty and students who will share their research in areas related to gender.

Liz Chavez of Wise Latina International – a nonprofit organization that supports women overcoming racial, cultural and economic barriers – will present a keynote speech during the conference lunch on Wednesday, April 1. Awards will be presented during that time, including Woman of UTEP, Woman of Valor and Moira Murphy Best Student Paper awards. An eight-minute mentoring session pairing career professionals with attendees seeking information on those careers also will take place during the luncheon.

Concurrent sessions are scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Union Building East, rooms 102 A – D. The luncheon will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Tomás Rivera Conference Center on the 3rd floor.

The conference will close at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at El Paso Community College’s historic Little Temple (906 El Paso St.) with a screening of the Chris Rock film “Good Hair” followed by a reception.
