The professorship recognizes faculty members for their outstanding academic accomplishments, particularly those who stimulate and promote excellence within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Zubia joined UTEP in 2001 after earning a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering at The University of New Mexico and working there as a research engineer and professor. His current research includes nanoscale aspects of electronic materials, solar cells and memristors — electrical components in a circuit.

The engineer is a recipient of a doctoral fellowship from the Ford Foundation, holds two U.S. patents and has served as a guest editor for the Journal of Quantum Electronics and the Journal of Electronic Materials. Zubia was also the chair of the third International Conference on Alternative Substrate Technology (ICAST) and co-chair of the seventh international TEXMEMS conference.

Zubia will take on the new role starting Tuesday, Sept. 1.
